Bomb squad called to Scots beach after rusty old boiler sparks emergency response

A rusty old boiler sparked an emergency response on a Scots beach after it was mistaken for a ‘bomb’.

The alarming discovery was made by a member of the public on the west end of Gullane beach in East Lothian.

Police and a specialist bomb disposal squad were called to the scene on Monday morning amid reports of a 'partially buried cyclinder' that was feared to be potential ordnance.

Members of the public were also urged to steer clear while the incident was being dealt with.

But upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the ‘device’ was in fact an old heating device.

A picture of the offending item on social shows it partially covered with wet sand while being partially exposed around the edges.

Police Scotland confirmed they were called and that the item will be removed.

A force spokesperson said: “Officers were called around 11am on Monday, 7 June, to a report of an item on the beach in Gullane.

“EOD attended and confirmed it wasn't suspicious and the item will be removed.”

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council confirmed they will be removing the item shortly.
