Bomb squad called to polling station in Motherwell after suspicious device found

A controlled explosion has been carried out after a 'suspicious device' was found at a polling station in Motherwell.

Officers from Police Scotland were called to the ground floor of Glen Tower flats in the Lanarkshire town at around 1am after reports of a suspicious device .

A cordon was put in place around the building with residents forced to evacuate while a controlled explosion was carried out by Explosive Ordnance Device staff as a precaution.

Inquiries are ongoing to establish how viable the device was and the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Cops remain on the scene this morning.

North Lanarkshire Council has advised voters to attend Knowetop Primary School, Knowetop Avenue in Motherwell instead of Glen Tower.

A North Lanarkshire Council statement read: "Due to a police incident, voters registered to vote at Glen Tower, Motherwell please now attend a polling station at Knowetop Primary School, Knowetop Avenue, Motherwell from 7am.

"All residents are safe and police are carrying out enquiries."
