Bomb squad called to Motherwell flats in response to suspicious device

A bomb squad has been called to a block of flats in Motherwell after reports of a 'suspicious device' in the building.

Emergency services have locked down Glen Tower after being called to the Glen Court address at 1am this morning (Thursday) and residents have been evacuated.

An EOD team have now carried out a controlled explosion on the device.

Glen Tower was due to function as a polling station in today's General election and voters have now been re-assigned to a different location.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report of what was described as a suspicious device on the ground floor of Glen Tower flats, Motherwell around 1am on Thursday, 12 December, 2019.

"A cordon has been placed around the building, residents within the cordon have been evacuated and a controlled explosion has been carried out by Explosive Ordnance Device staff as a precaution.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish how viable the device was and the full circumstances surrounding the incident."
