Bomb squad called to Kirkdale industrial estate after 'World War II shell' found

The bomb squad was called out to a Kirkdale industrial estate today following the discovery of a suspected artillery shell.

Officers were called at about 8am after the item was found on grounds in Junction Road at the small industrial estate.

There were unconfirmed reports the artillery shell was a World War II bomb which had been unearthed.

It was also unclear who found the device and where it had been exactly discovered.

Bomb squad, a yellow matrix police van and other police vehicles were at the scene this morning.

A cordon was set up as a precaution from the junction of Bankhall Lane and Derby Road to the Junction with Juniper Street and vehicles were unable to travel down the road when the cordon was in place.

However, people working at nearby units at the industrial site were seen carrying on with their work and unaffected by the discovery.

The explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) attended the scene and have now removed the device to dispose of it safely and the road reopened soon after.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm officers were in attendance in Kirkdale following the discovery of a suspected artillery shell this morning (Tuesday, 1 October).
