An industrial estate was evacuated in Dumfries on Wednesday after a suspicious package was found.

Police, fire and rescue, ambulance crews and a bomb squad were deployed to Brownrigg Loaning in Dumfries at around 11am after reports of a suspect device being found on the estate.

Police arrived at the scene and closed the road before evacuating a number of businesses and homes nearby.

After nearly two hours the package was assessed as posing “no threat” to the public before it was removed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a suspicious package at a yard on Brownrigg Loaning in Dumfries around 11am on Wednesday January 5.

“Officers attended and a number of premises were evacuated.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal attended and the item was assessed as non-viable and posing no threat.

“It has been removed and police enquiries are ongoing.”
