Streets reopen after replica hand grenade found in Union Canal in Edinburgh

Streets around the Union Canal in Edinburgh were cordoned off after an item thought to be an antique hand grenade was found.

A bomb disposal team was called out after the discovery was made on Saturday afternoon.

The grenade was later found to be a replica which posed no risk to the public, and the streets around Yeaman Place were reopened.

Police Scotland said earlier: "Officers were called to a report of, what appeared to be, a recovered antique hand grenade from the Union Canal, Edinburgh.

"The canal footpath is closed at Harrison Place and Gibson Terrace. Yeaman Place has also been closed to both road traffic and pedestrians, as a precaution, and a cordon is in place to ensure the safety of the public.

"Officers and EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) are in attendance and we would like to thank the public for their patience."
