Bomb squad called in and residents evacuated after 'firearm and explosives' found

A bomb squad and armed police have been called to the scene after after police uncovered 'a firearm and explosives'.

A street in Tameside has been cordoned off and residents told to leave their houses, according to an eyewitness.

A bomb disposal device is now being used at the scene by police.

The evacuation comes after police raided a home in Fernley Avenue, Denton, last night (Thursday).

It is understood people were also evacuated last night too.

'Several items of interest' were found as the warrant was carried out, including 'suspected firearms', which have been taken to a safe place to be examined.

A man in his 40s was also arrested and remains in custody for questioning.

The police have said 'there is not believed to be a wider risk to the public'.

Officers remain in the area as they carry out investigation.

"Specialist officers executed a warrant at an address on Fernley Avenue, Denton, yesterday evening (Thursday 9 December)," a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police has said.

"Several items of interest have been recovered from the property - including suspected firearms - and have been taken to a safe space to be forensically examined.

"A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and explosives and remains in custody for questioning.

"Enquiries are ongoing although at this stage, there is not believed to be a wider risk to the public. Local officers will remain in the area should anyone have any concerns."
