The cordon was lifted after the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team declared the area safe.

GMP said earlier: "At around 1.30pm this afternoon (31 October), police were called to a report that a suspected grenade had been found in the canal near Edge Lane, Stretford.

"A cordon has been put in place and Explosive Ordnance Disposal are due to attend.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

A fire service spokesman later added: "Firefighters from Salford and Sale attended an incident in Stretford, after a member of the public found a possible hand grenade in a canal.

"Firefighters and police worked closely with one another to establish a safe perimeter around the incident, so the EOD team could attend and assess the device.

"That assessment has now concluded that the device is not viable and the perimeter has been removed."

The bomb squad were earlier called to Salford after a World War Two era bomb was found in a garden.
