Bomb squad called and family home cordoned off after 'explosive' found

Bomb squad were called to a family home after an explosive was found in the garden of a house.

A cordon is currently in place around the property on Castle Road in Runcorn, after a suspicious device was found shortly after 1pm on Monday.

Officers from Cheshire Police were called to the house before EOD soldiers were also dispatched to assist with the incident.

Pictures taken at the scene showed officers and army bomb disposal working amongst trees at the bottom of a garden.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police confirmed that the device was originally believed a WW1 grenade.

In a statement, the force said: "At around 1pm today, Monday 2 March, officers were called to reports that a suspicious device had been found in a garden on Castle Road in Runcorn.

"Officers attended the scene and found what is believed to be a WW1 grenade.

"A small cordon has been set up as precautionary measure and EOD have been called to assess the device."
