Bomb squad called after 'suspicious items' found close to church in Tameside

Bomb disposal experts were called to deal with “suspicious items” found close to a church in Tameside this afternoon.

Expert officers were called to help police at the scene, close to Holy Trinity Church, on Dean Street, in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The bomb disposal crew was called “as a precaution”, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Nobody has been injured and enquiries are ongoing.

Police were called at around 1.40pm this afternoon (January 7), a GMP spokesperson said.

“At around 1.40pm on Thursday 7 January 2021, police were called to reports that suspicious items had been found outside a church on Dean Street in Ashton-under-Lyne," they said.

“Officers are in attendance and bomb disposal officers have been called as a precaution.

“No-one has been injured and enquiries are ongoing.”
