Bomb squad called after suspected grenade found in canal

The bomb squad have been called after a suspected grenade was found in a canal.

Police received reports that an item was found in water near Margaret Street in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside.

Officers from the bomb squad are at the scene as investigations continue this afternoon.

A witness reported seeing police and officers from the bomb squad working at the Portland Basin.

Police are also at the scene (Facebook)

A GMP spokesperson said: "Just after 1.15pm today (12 February 2021), officers were called to a report of a suspicious item in a canal on Margaret Street in Ashton-under-Lyne.

"The item is believed to be a suspected grenade. Officers and EOD are in attendance."
