Bomb squad called after exploded shells found in Northumberland village

Two unexploded First World War shells have been removed by the bomb squad after they were found in a Northumberland village.

Police were called after the devices were discovered at an address on West View in Wylam, reportedly in a garden shed, at just before 2pm on Monday.

Officers from Northumbria Police made the area safe before calling the bomb disposal unit for assistance.

Experts then assessed the shells and found they "posed no threat to the public" before removing them and taking them for disposal.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 1.45pm today (Monday), police were contacted by a member of the public who had found two suspected unexploded First World War shells at an address on West View, Wylam.

“Officers attended along with bomb disposal experts as a precaution who confirmed the items posed no threat to the public.

“Experts then removed the shells from the address for safe disposal.”
