Bomb-itty of Errors

Bomb-itty of Errors

In the high culture/low culture debate that always get wheeled out at Edinburgh festival time, it is often forgotten just how much Shakespeare there is on the Fringe. True, not all of it is Shakespeare quite as we know it, but this hilarious rap version of Shakespeare's story of lost identical twins and mistaken identity follows in a list of honourable attempts (including The Donkey Show) to wrest Shakespeare from the high- brow and take it into the clubs and on to the streets. It is not so much a case of dumbing down, as pumping up the volume and giving it back to the people.

To be honest, not a lot of Shakespeare's verse survives this frenzied assault by a coolly brilliant DJ and four terrific cross-dressing rappers. But the story does - and, more importantly, a sense that all the original intent remains intact as well. This show is so full of rude life, and so exuberantly gleeful and raucous that it should be available as a tonic from your doctor.

Shakespeare offered his audiences the poetry of the times and since rap is the poetry of ours, there seems nothing wrong with dragging a 16th-century play into the 21st century. It wouldn't work so well if it wasn't done with such streetwise cunning and bare-faced pavement cheek. The result is like a glorious mucky pantomime, a life-affirming, hip-hopping romp.
