Bomb disposal teams scrambled as 'WWII mortar bomb' found in field

Bomb disposal teams were scrambled after a 'WWII mortar bomb' was found in a field.

Police were called to an area of farmland in Warrington, Cheshire yesterday afternoon (Monday 26) following the discovery, the ECHO reports.

Stockton Lane was sealed off for a number of hours and people were urged to avoid the area as the item was assessed.

The item is believed to have been a WW2 artillery shell cone.

A spokesperson for Warrington Police posted on their Facebook page: "Stockton Lane was closed as a result of the incident and people were asked to avoid the area as a precaution.

"Stockton Lane will be closed for the next few hours due to a WW2 artillery shell cone found in a nearby field.

"Army in attendance".

Following further investigation, Cheshire Police said the device turned out not to be explosive but was taken away to be properly disposed of.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At around 2pm on Monday, July 26, police in attendance at a farm on Stockton Lane, Stockton Heath, were notified that an unexploded mortar bomb had been found at the address.

"A cordon was set up as a precaution and the EOD attended the scene.

"Following a further investigation it was deemed not to be explosive but it was taken away to be disposed of."
