Bomb disposal team finds package on bus 'not dangerous' after Avonmouth road closure and evacuations

Bomb disposal experts have concluded a package found on a bus in Avonmouth is not dangerous.

The item was discovered in a bag on a Stagecoach bus this morning (May 19), leading to home evacuations and a section of McLaren Road being closed.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) have finished assessing the package and are satisfied it isn’t dangerous.

"We’d like to thank the individual for their vigilance and alerting us to their concerns and the public for their patience while the incident was dealt with."

The Stagecoach driver called police to the bus stop behind St Andrew's Church just after 10.45am.

McLaren Road was closed between Jutland Road and Avonmouth Road. Residents of some homes in Richmond Villas were advised to evacuate as a precaution.

The cordon was lifted at about 12.10pm and people were able to return to their homes after the bus was moved away from the residential area for further investigation.

The assessment led to the conclusion the package was not dangerous.

A spokesman for Stagecoach West said no passengers or staff were injured, and the operator worked closely with police and other agencies to resolve the incident.
