Bomb disposal team called to suspected explosive device in Washington garage

A bomb disposal team has been called to an address in Sunderland after reports of a suspected explosive device.

Officers were called to an address on Norfolk Drive, Washington, at around 7.40pm on Monday night after reports of a suspected explosive device being found.

On arrival, officers found a suspected historic hand grenade located in a garage.

As a result, the address was cordoned off and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) have been called to the scene.

Witnesses from the scene said police had been at the scene for around two hours as they dealt with the ongoing incident.

Four police vehicles could be seen parked up near the address on Norfolk Drive while they awaited the arrival of the bomb squad.

The EOD arrived shortly before 10pm and began carrying out investigations.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Police received a report of a suspected explosive device at an address on Norfolk Drive, Concord, Washington.

"At around 7.40pm officers attended the scene where a suspected historic hand grenade was located in a garage.

"Police have cordoned off the address and EOD are aware and travelling to the scene."
