Bomb disposal experts called after World War II hand grenades discovered in woods

Police had to disable World War II hand grenades that were discovered in the woods.

Officers had to carry out 'a controlled explosion' on Friday, May 1, after suspected World War II ammunition was found in private woodland in Cotgrave.

Police were made aware of the discovery, off Laming Gap Lane, just after 6pm on Thursday, April 30.

It was reported that the items found appeared to be hand grenades.

As a precaution, Nottinghamshire Police requested the assistance of the Joint Services Explosive Ordinance Disposal Engineers and a cordon was put in place.

Bomb disposal experts carried out a successful controlled explosion at around 11.20am.

A controlled explosion is a method for detonating or disabling a suspected explosive device.

No evacuations took place.

This is the second incident that police have attended involving suspected World War II ammunition in a matter of days.

The force received a unconnected report at around 9.10am on Wednesday, April 29, after what looked like an old bomb had been found in woodland off Firs Road in Edwalton.

Nottinghamshire Police officers and the Bomb Disposal Unit attended the scene and examined the item but it was deemed to be not live or dangerous.

No evacuations took place while inspections were made, the force confirmed.
