Bomb disposal experts called after World War II grenade discovered in South Belfast

Police had to disable a World War II grenade that was discovered in the South Belfast on Thursday.

The PSNI were called to a scene of a 'suspicious object' earlier this evening.

Police were made aware of the discovery, off Haywood Avenue, on June 18.

A number of homes have had to be evacuated as a result and motorists were advised to seek alternatives routes.

It was reported that the items found appeared to be a 'grenade'.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Officers attended and tasked ATO to examine the object, as a number of homes were evacuated during the incident.

"The object has been declared an old, WW2 deactivated, non-viable empty grenade and removed from the area."
