Bomb disposal called after magnet fisher pulls suspected grenade from canal and takes it home

Bomb disposal experts have been called to a street in Tameside after a magnet fisher pulled a suspected wartime grenade from a canal.

A cordon has been put in place on Higher Green in Ashton-under-Lyne, just off Curzon Road, while the item is assessed.

The device was fished from the water near Portland Basin on Sunday afternoon by Kieran Hurst.

The 24-year-old had been with a friend magnet fishing at the time and says it was one of the last things he found.

The street was taped off by police (ASP)

At first, he thought the device was inert - it wasn't until he got home later that evening he and his partner realised the suspected grenade could be active.

GMP confirmed they were called to the scene at around 7.46pm.

They described the device as 'very old and rusted'.

Kieran says he placed the item - which they believe to be from the First World War or early Second World War - into a plastic tub of water and handed it over to police.

Bomb disposal arrived on scene at around 10.40pm.

GMP said ahead of their arrival: "We were called at 7.46pm.

"A member of the public had recovered an item - thought to be a grenade - from the canal.

"EOD officers have been called to assess the item.

"There is no wider risk to the public."

Kieran has been magnet fishing for around a year and has his own Youtube channel 'kiwiklobber magnet fisher'.

"Normally I find things like scaffolding pipes and rusty pieces of metal," he said.

"I have found a few knives and guns before but this is a first."
