Bomb delivered inside a newspaper

An elderly man who lives in California is recovering from surgery after being seriously injured by a bomb that was apparently planted in his Sunday newspaper.

The force of the blast severed one finger on his right hand and broke his left arm. He was airlifted to hospital.

Jose Sanchez-Zarco, 85, was injured after picking up a green plastic bag containing his paper that was lying on the lawn at his home in Vacaville, a city about halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento.

According to a firefighter who happens to live opposite Sanchez-Zarco, and who reached him moments after the explosion, the man was saying "the bomb, the bomb"

It is unclear whether the paper was intended for the victim or was a random act.
