BOM issues storm warnings for Gold Coast, Brisbane, Ipswich and other parts of south-east Queensland

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for communities across south-east Queensland this afternoon, with some areas receiving more than 70 millimetres of rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued an alert for damaging winds and large hailstones, and warned heavy rainfall that might lead to flash flooding was "likely" in Ipswich, Logan, Gold Coast, Redland City and Brisbane City.

Parts of the Somerset, Scenic Rim, South Burnett, Moreton Bay, Western Downs and Toowoomba council areas could also be affected, the BOM said.

The wet weather had largely cleared by 7pm, with some rain still occurring in the Kilcoy area north of Brisbane.

Senior forecaster James Harding said coastal areas had recorded the highest rainfall.

"North Pine Dam had 77 millimetres and broadly 50-60mm through a large part from the Gold Coast up to the Sunshine Coast," he said.

"Mapleton received 55mm in half an hour."

There were heavy falls further north too, with 76mm recorded in three hours inland of Ingham.

Storms on the Gold Coast generated impressive clouds above the northern parts of the city.

The cell that affected the Gold Coast stretched north-west through Logan, Ipswich and into the Lockyer Valley region.

The Brisbane CBD, Cleveland and Strathpine were also hit, with the rain in central Brisbane falling heavily but briefly just after 5:30pm.

Other cells were identified near Esk in the South Burnett and the other north of Crows Nest.

There have been no reports of damage.

Energex spokesperson Emma Oliveri said Queensland's south-east corner recorded 134, 000 lightning strikes.

While there were no major outages, 843 customers were left without power across the region due to trees that had fallen on power lines in Ashgrove and Varsity Lakes.
