Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Oldham Athletic and Walsall interested in ex-Newcastle United defender

Several clubs in the EFL including Bolton Wanderers are reported to be interested in ex-Newcastle United prospect and Hartlepool United defender Jamie Sterry.

The 25-year-old wing-back helped the Pools reach League Two via the National League play-offs after they beat Torquay United.

He played 30 times for Dave Challinor's side on their route back to the EFL and is out of contract at Victoria Park this summer.

The promoted side have offered him a new deal which would reportedly make him one of the club's highest earners.

But if that does not materialise, Bolton, Sunderland, Oldham Athletic and Walsall are among the League One and League Two clubs who are interested in the defender, NE Sport News reports.

Sterry has previous experience of playing in the EFL, having spent time out on loan from former club Newcastle at both Coventry City and Crewe Alexandra.

He was released by the St James' Park club last summer and later joined Northern Premier League side South Shields, before joining Hartlepool last December.

Sterry played eight times for the Magpies after coming through the youth team ranks at Newcastle, making his debut for the club in the Premier League in May 2016.

In the wing-back and full-back role, Wanderers have Gethin Jones, Declan John, Liam Gordon, and Harry Brockbank as among those who can play those positions.
