Bolton Wanderers' new League One rivals hit out as boss bound for Watford leaves

Bolton Wanderers fresh opponents for next season in the form of Forest Green Rovers have said they are 'disappointed' over the impending loss of boss Rob Edwards to Watford and claim that negotiations have taken place 'behind our backs'.

The Green Devils will be in League One next season after winning the League Two crown. The Nailsworth club won the title on goal difference ahead of Exeter City.

Wanderers played Forest Green for the first time on their way to promotion out of League Two in the 2020/21 campaign. The Whites suffered a 1-0 loss at the University of Bolton Stadium but winning by the same scoreline at the New Lawn thanks to Eoin Doyle's goal.

Forest Green will be in League One next season along with Wanderers, but will be without head coach Edwards after his departure from the Gloucestershire club was confirmed. He is expected to become the new manager at relegated Premier League side Watford.

Forest Green released a club statement on its website expressing disappointment over Edwards' departure and claims that negotiations with the Hornets have taken place behind the League Two champions' backs.

The statement read: "FGR confirms the departure of Head Coach Rob Edwards. Rob was a key part of the team that gained promotion to League One this season.

"We’re disappointed that our support, loyalty and honesty towards Rob has been repaid in this way - with negotiations taking place behind our backs.

"We had no contact from Watford, from whom we might expect less, but in any event this kind of behaviour gives football a bad name.

"We thank Rob for all his work at FGR - forgive him the manner of his departure and wish him well."
