Bolton Wanderers linked with summer transfer move for released Portsmouth midfielder

Released Portsmouth midfielder Andy Cannon is reportedly attracting the interest of the club's new League One rivals Bolton Wanderers

The 25-year-old will depart Fratton Park this summer after he was not offered a fresh contract by Danny Cowley's side.

Cannon racked up 79 appearances and three goals in his time at Pompey after arriving from Rochdale in January 2019.

He was a regular for Pompey this campaign as they narrowly missed out on the League One play-offs, turning out 49 times for the club this season under both Cowley and predecessor Kenny Jackett.

Cannon was one of six players released by Portsmouth when the club announced its retained list over the weekend.

Now, according to reports from The News, Ian Evatt's Wanderers are understood to have an interest in bringing Cannon back to the North West.

Cowley explained the reasons for letting Cannon leave Fratton Park and believes the midfielder did have a good season at the club.

But he pointed to wanting a different option at Pompey who is more suited to Cowley's style of playing football

He told HampshireLive : "I think Andy had a really good season, I think he had a really good season.

“Unfortunately, when we arrived he was struggling with a back injury which meant we weren’t able to use him how we would’ve liked. Sometimes, you are just looking for certain players that can fit your game idea and game model.

“You are always looking for certain characteristics in players. We like to see learning capacity, we always try to find players that we can really help and develop and improve.”
