Bolton Wanderers forward misses out on top 50 EFL players list as former loanee ranks highly

Bolton Wanderers top scorer Eoin Doyle has narrowly missed out on being named in a list of the best players in the EFL following a vote by fans.

The 33-year-old has just missed the cut in FourFourTwo magazine’s annual Top 50 list of players from across the Championship, League One and League Two.

Supporters were asked to pick the best players in their opinion from each division.

And Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been voted the best player in the entire EFL, followed by Norwich City pair Emi Buendia and Teemu Pukki.

Former Wanderers loanee Adam Armstrong is fourth on the list.

Several players narrowly missed out on a place in the top 50 and Doyle - who moved to Wanderers from Swindon Town last summer after becoming League Two top scorer - is one of those.

Discussing Doyle, FourFourTwo wrote: "Doyle scored 25 times for Swindon to become FFT's League Two player of the year last term - after going to Bolton, he'd hit 15 goals by early March."

Armstrong made 23 appearances for the Whites and scored three goals during the 2017/18 season, before he was recalled by parent club Newcastle United and then sent to Blackburn Rovers initially on loan, before joining the Ewood Park club permanently.

Armstrong is fourth on the list.

Of the former Bolton loanee, the magazine wrote: "Armstrong's abilities have been known in the Football League since he struck 20 League One goals for Coventry as a teenager on loan from Newcastle.

"While he was less prolific in temporary spells with Barnsley and Bolton, the 5ft 8ins striker has been a big hit at Rovers after joining in 2018 - and his 2020 brought 27 goals."
