Bolton Wanderers fan banned over alleged racist abuse at game

A Bolton Wanderers fan has been banned from matches for alleged racist abuse towards one of the club's players.

The alleged incident happened during Wanderers' Sky Bet League One match against Burton Albion on New Year's Day.

The fan involved is believed to be a male season ticket holder, who directed the comment towards one of the home players during the game, which Bolton lost 4-3.

The comment was reported to stewards, who then ejected the man from The University of Bolton Stadium.

The club has since confirmed that the supporter has been issued with an immediate banning order, while Greater Manchester Police have also launched an investigation into the alleged incident.

A Bolton Wanderers spokesman said: “A report was made to our stewards during the game regarding a supporter using racially abusive language.

“The individual was immediately ejected from the stadium and has subsequently been issued with an immediate banning order, pending further investigation by Greater Manchester Police.

“Bolton Wanderers Football Club does not tolerate racist or discriminatory abuse of any kind and will not hesitate to take the appropriate action.

“We continue to encourage supporters to report any such behaviour to their nearest steward or to download the Kick It Out app.”

Bolton, now managed by former Rochdale boss Keith Hill, are currently two points adrift at the bottom of the table and have just seven points despite four wins and seven draws, due to having received a 12-point deduction.

The club began the season on minus points after entering administration prior to a takeover being completed last summer.
