Bolton Wanderers defender explains why Manchester City star is his toughest career opponent so far

Bolton Wanderers defender Gethin Jones has named Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez as the toughest opponent of his career so far.

The Whites right-back came up against the City winger when he was at Fleetwood Town and the multiple Premier League winner was at Leicester City.

It came in January 2018 when the Cod Army forced the top flight outfit to an FA Cup third round replay at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes came out on top thanks to two goals from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Jones - who joined Bolton last summer and racked up 40 appearances and scored three goals for Wanderers on the way to securing automatic promotion out of League Two - has explained why the now City winger is the toughest opponent he has come up against so far in his career.

In a Q&A answering questions from Wanderers fans, he told Bolton's Twitter account: "I'd have to say Mahrez. When I was at Fleetwood we played Leicester in the FA Cup and Mahrez was on my side.

"He's just so difficult to play against because he can go inside and outside. You think you've got him, and he just chops you.

"I'd probably say Mahrez (as toughest opponent come up against)."

Jones spent half a season on loan at Mansfield Town before moving to Carlisle United from the Cod Army in 2019, and joined Wanderers last summer, with his contract being extended for next season in League One after an option was exercised.

Mahrez joined City in the summer of 2018 after 48 goals in 179 Leicester appearances for a reported £60m.
