Bolton Wanderers confirm January transfer window signing of Fulham defender

Marlon Fossey has become the latest January transfer window signing at Bolton Wanderers after his arrival from Fulham was announced.

The 23-year-old right-back has joined Wanderers from the Cottagers on a loan deal lasting until the end of the season.

Fossey spent last season out on loan in League One with Shrewsbury Town and racked up 14 appearances with Salop, including against Wanderers in the EFL Trophy.

The defender, who has previously represented the United States at under-20 level, is yet to make his debut for the Craven Cottage outfit's first team.

He arrives having featured regularly for Fulham's under-23 outfit this season in Premier League 2 and signed a new contract at Fulham lasting until the summer of 2023 last year.

Bolton have beaten MLS side Inter Miami to the services of the Cottagers youngster.

Wanderers boss Ian Evatt said: "Marlon is a player that has had League One experience with Shrewsbury.

"He isn't a young player so to speak, he's out of Fulham's U23's but he is 22/23. He's physically ready for first team football, he is a loan but also something that both of us are looking at as something for the future and more permanent.

"He is athletically fantastic, lightning fast and has that profile of relentless sprinting that you need to do as a full back for us.

"He can handle the ball and is used to playing in a similar system at Fulham, so he ticks a lot of boxes. We've had Gethin (Jones) out for a while we know that and we've missed him.

"Obviously the young players that have taken his place have done fantastically well and the best they can. It's been an issue for us and it's been makeshift so we needed cover there."

"It takes the pressure off Gethin's recovery and enables us to have someone who is very competitive and gives us someone of the same problem as we have on the left in Declan John."

The new signing has already had his first training session with his new teammates this morning and is fit to enter Evatt's squad.

“I’ve been playing U23s football this season and it’s a step up from that and I’m excited for the challenge,” Fossey told the club website.

“With 23s games you’ve got 10s/20s people watching. Now you’ve got potentially thousands and I like playing in front of a lot of people and I’m getting the prospect of doing that every week, so I can’t wait.

“It’s a higher level and I think the more minutes I can earn myself the higher my level will get. It’s a great opportunity to test myself and whatever happens I think I’ll learn a lot from it.

“I’m aware of Bolton’s Premier League history. I was up here a couple of days ago and was shown around the stadium and the facilities.

“It definitely looks like a club that was once at the top. There’s definitely an aura of hunger to get back up there and hopefully I can help them with my little part while I’m here.”
