Bolton Wanderers can be 'dark horse' in League One promotion race, says Championship club chairman

Bolton Wanderers have the momentum to be 'dark horses' in the race to be at the top of League One this season.

That's the view of Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

The Trotters are back in the third tier of English football after winning automatic promotion out of League Two with a top three finish along with Cheltenham Town and Cambridge United.

Ian Evatt's side have got their pre-season preparations under way and have secured back-to-back victories ahead of the League One campaign against Longridge Town and Atherton Collieries.

Wanderers have their next friendly this weekend when they travel to Broadhurst Park to take on FC United of Manchester.

The upcoming League One campaign will see several big names compete in the division.

Alongside Wanderers are the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic.

Peterborough, of course, will not be part of proceedings in League One this season after achieving automatic promotion to the Championship.

But he still has his eye on what is going on in the third tier and, answering a question on Twitter from a fan asking him which sides other than the Tractor Boys he feels will be challenging at the top of the table, MacAnthony believes that though it is too early to tell, Wanderers could slip under the radar.

He posted: "Too early to say. Bolton have momentum to be dark horse.

"Wigan rebuilt well. Ipswich have manager who wins League One.

"Clubs who game down will challenge.. If MK Dons sign prolific goal scorer at that level they go up IMO after seeing them & studying data.."

Wanderers begin their League One campaign at the University of Bolton Stadium against MK Dons on August 7.
