Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt on Charlton Athletic win, four changes and travelling support

Bolton Wanderers came from behind to put four past Charlton Athletic on the road and return to winning ways in emphatic fashion.

Wanderers went behind at the Valley in the first half thanks to Josh Davison's opener, but Dapo Afolayan equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Kieran Lee then struck twice after the break before skipper Antoni Sarcevic slotted home in injury time as Wanderers picked up three points and moved up to seventh in the League One table.

Ian Evatt made a total of four changes before the game and they paid off as he rotated his squad, with 888 travelling Wanderers fans watching their team win at the Valley against the struggling Addicks.

After the game, Wanderers manager Evatt spoke to the press and here's what he had to say on the big win.

What’s your initial emotions after that?

“It’s been coming. Did we play as well as we did on Saturday? No, but football’s a funny game isn’t it. I thought first half we actually started really well, confident with the ball, and then we gave away as we do at the minute, a really poor goal.

“But then we gathered ourselves and grew into the first half and what you have to remember is sometimes, and our fans have been brilliant, by the way, they’ve really bought into what we’re doing, but the reason why we’re passing it around the back is to work the opposition, tire them out, and then second half, teams blow up.

“That happened at Sunderland on Saturday, that happened at Ipswich, it’s happened against tonight - teams cannot press the ball for 90 minutes, I don’t care who you are. Then once we’ve earned the right by moving them side to side, we then take advantage, and second half we were clinical.”

Dapo’s game came just at the right time just before half-time, did that change the team talk?

“Yeah. They got a rollicking anyway, they got a roasting because we’re better than that. Once we raised the intensity and the tempo, teams cannot live with them, they can’t and that’s the outcome and that’s what they can produce but we have to do that, with that intensity from minute one.

“That’s not easy and we have to remember we’re still a work in progress, we’re not getting carried away. There’s loads more to come from this group and performances can still be better but when we play with that speed and tempo and intensity, with and without the ball, teams can’t live with us.”

Kieran Lee was one of the changes tonight and he popped up with two goals - you must be delighted with him?

“I am delighted for him because we had a joke that it’s been a long time coming. Obviously he was unlucky with the Burton one, but I’ve got a really strong squad of players and I trust them all and I decided to make changes tonight because it was a really tough game at Sunderland on Saturday. It was physical, a long journey, and they all took it the right way, the ones that were left out.

“The ones that have come into the team did exactly what I thought they would and Kieran was one of those.”

The fans were in full voice throughout the whole game - it was great backing?

“It’s amazing that they’ve travelled like this, this distance on a Tuesday night in these weather conditions, with no fuel! Most of them must have electric cars!

“The connection and bond between them and us is there for all to see and they’re really proud of us and we’re really proud of them and long may that continue.”
