Bolton Wanderers and police to investigate 'incident' following Exeter City match

An investigation is underway after trouble broke out at the end of Bolton Wanderers' match against Exeter City.

A win would have seen Wanderers promoted from League Two and hundreds of fans gathered outside the University of Bolton Stadium to offer some support.

Earlier in the week, the club had advised fans not to turn up but safety measures such as metal fencing and stewards were put in place to try and control the crowds.

The afternoon started well for the Whites, with Gethin Jones taking the lead after 15 minutes - a goal met with huge applause and colourful smoke bombs from the fans watching on their phones and listening to the radio outside the ground.

However, Wanderers capitulated and Exeter eventually won 2-1, thanks to a winning goal in the sixth minute of injury time, at the end of the game.

Despite Bolton still being in the automatic promotion spots heading into the last game of the season, next week, the joyous atmosphere turned bitter and a video on social media appears to show a scuffle between fans after the final whistle.

Supporters then appear to force open one of the doors of the stadium, before making their way inside.

There is also a photograph circulating on social media, which shows a seemingly injured fan, who was allegedly hit with a bottle.

Manchester Evening News' Bolton Wanderers reporter John McDougall was still in the stadium at the time and he said that a smoke bomb was let off inside the concourse.

Another fan allegedly made their way into the press room but John said he didn't personally see this.

Bolton Wanderers confirmed that the club is investigating the incident, along with Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

A Club Spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident that took place after today’s game and are currently investigating the matter with Greater Manchester Police.”

Manchester Evening News has approached GMP and the North West Ambulance Service for comment.
