Bolton Wanderers ahead of Ipswich & Plymouth but close to Sheffield Wednesday in key defensive area

Bolton Wanderers sit just outside the top six in League One as the division begins to take shape as 2022 nears its conclusion.

The Whites are seventh in the third tier of English football as things stand following last weekend's action in the division. Ian Evatt's side came away with a point following a goalless draw against Cambridge United on the road.

Bolton are outside the play-off positions on goal difference alone. Wanderers have the same number of points - 28 - as the teams directly above them in the table, fellow ex-Premier League sides Derby County and Portsmouth.

A hallmark of the season so far for Wanderers has been their formidable defensive record. The Whites boast the joint best defensive record in the division so far, along with Barnsley.

With the World Cup poised to begin on Sunday, the Premier League and Championship are taking a break for the next month. The action in League One will continue, however.

And the Whites will be aiming to continue their formidable defensive record when they travel to the Fylde Coast to take on Fleetwood Town this Saturday. Bolton have eight clean sheets in the division so far, the joint second best in League One.

Barnsley have the same amount as Bolton. Only Sheffield Wednesday have more clean sheets than Bolton, who top this particular aspect with nine so far this campaign.

The Whites have more clean sheets than both Ipswich Town and Plymouth Argyle, the two teams which are in the automatic promotion places at the moment. Four teams have kept six clean sheets each and include Cheltenham Town, Derby County, Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers.
