Bolton Town Hall will turn red, white and blue all week ahead of Armed Forces Day

Bolton Town Hall is set to turn red, white and blue this week in support of the armed forces.

It comes ahead of Armed Forces Day which will be observed on Saturday, June 27, across the country.

Bolton Council leader David Greenhalgh has also announced plans to pay tribute to Dame Vera Lynn, who passed away on Thursday, June 18, at the age of 103.

Throughout the week her songs will be played over the speaker system in Victoria Square to celebrate her work in supporting the armed forces during the Second World War.

"Bolton is proud to be honouring our armed forces this year despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic," Coun Greenhalgh said.

“Bolton Town Hall will be lit red, white and blue all week from Monday.

“The Armed Forces flag will be flown from the building all week from Monday and come down at dusk on Saturday, June 27.

“A wreath will be laid on the cenotaph by the Mayor to remember those brave men and women who gave their lives for their country.

“And, the week will also honour Dame Vera Lynn, who sadly passed away a few days ago. Her music will be played across the Town Hall Square intermittently throughout the week.

"Despite the unprecedented times we live in this is a hugely important week that we cannot and will not ignore, a celebration and thanks to those who have given their lives for our country and those who continue to protect us."

The council is also asking local people to salute the armed forces from home and send in any photographs or videos to the Mayor's Office at mayorsoffice@bolton.gov.uk.
