Bolton's coronavirus 'hotspots' revealed as experts make new plea

There are no areas of Bolton with less than three new coronavirus cases registered on the latest figures.

The most recent borough-by-borough data from Public Health England shows the largest number of infections were in Kearsley, Stoneclough and Little Lever.

There were fewer cases in Blackrod and Westhoughton but the numbers in all areas continued to rise in the week from September 3-9.

This data is broken down by Middle Super Output Areas (MSOA) with populations of around 7,000 people.

Bolton continues to have the highest infection rate in the UK, with the latest national figures showing 192 people tested positive for Covid-19 for every 100,000 residents in the town.

There has also been an increase in the number of cases among older people. Over the last few weeks it was residents aged 20-39 who had accounted for most new infections, but this is now beginning to change.

Lynn Donkin, Bolton Council’s Assistant Director of Public Health, said the numbers show why people must continue to follow the lockdown rules.

“Currently the numbers of cases we are seeing across the borough is a concern," she explained.

"No one single factor fully explains the rise in case numbers in Bolton.

”We are seeing cases in all 35 of the small areas (MSOAs) across the borough, and looking at the recent period since September 24, we have started to see increases happening in all areas of the town.

“We are also seeing changes in the age distribution of cases. Although we are still seeing the highest numbers of cases amongst the younger age group 20-39, we are seeing increasing numbers in the older age groups too.

“We all need to stick to the rules for Bolton – do not mix with other households indoors or outdoors, only use public transport for essential purposes, remember the importance of washing hands and wearing a face covering.”

With 43 cases recorded on the latest MSOA figures, Kearsley and Stoneclough is the area with the highest number of infections anywhere in Greater Manchester.

There were also 30 positive tests recorded in Little Lever, 25 in Rumworth South, 25 in Tonge, 22 in Highfield and New Bury and 20 in Lostock and Ladybarn.

At the other end of the scale, Horwich North has just four cases, while areas around Westhoughton, Bromley Cross, Bradshaw and Blackrod have six.

This data is updated daily and figures regularly change.
