Bolton chef mocks Salt Bae's £850 steak with £12.50 pork pie covered in gold leaf

A Bolton chef has spoofed Salt Bae's expensive steaks by selling a £12.50 pork pie covered in gold leaf.

Gareth Mason's Lancashire-inspired menu also includes gold-wrapped chips, bacon and gold sausage butties and a 24-carat carrot.

The 33-year-old, who is head chef at Absolute Bar and Bistro in Westhoughton, covered his signature Whist Pies in edible 24-carat gold leaf to mock the 'ludicrous' menu at Salt Bae's Nusr-et steakhouse in London.

But while the Turkish butcher-turned-steakmonger charges £850 for his steaks, Gareth says his dishes were valued at just 5p by a local jewellery store.

"It's more Morecambe Bay than Salt Bae," he joked.

"We've got the traditional Lancashire dishes covered in gold for a fraction of the price you'd pay at his restaurant."

Salt Bae, whose real name is Nusret Gokce, has had diners falling over themselves to lap up his extravagant gold-covered steaks and burgers since his restaurant in the capital opened last month.

While the restaurant has been slammed by critics, there is no shortage of eager celebs queuing up to pay eye-watering prices and posting about it online.

Reality TV star Gemma Collins was one of the first to bag a table and ranked the experience 'ten out of ten' despite nearly choking when she saw the £1,450 bill.

Former glamour model Danielle Lloyd treated herself to a £100 gold-wrapped burger, later admitting it was 'really expensive' but worth it for 'the experience'.

Earlier this month a guest at the restaurant shared a photo online of their shocking receipt, that listed every item that they had ordered night, said: "That's just taking the p**s".

They had ordered a Golden Tomahawk - an £850 steak covered in gold leaf - and 16 Nusret Baklava's - a traditional Turkish dessert typically served with Matei Radulescu, a Turkish ice cream - for a total of £400.

By contrast, a pie and pickle platter costs £12 at Absolute Bar and Bistro, which Gareth opened earlier this month - just down the road from where he grew up.

The father-of-two added: "It just shows that wrapping food in gold is sheer stupidity.

"There's no price that can justify it. It adds nothing at all to the food, it tastes of nothing and it just dissolves on contact. It's just a gimmick for appearances.

"Getting a steak and wrapping it in gold doesn't make it worth £800. There has to be a barrier of stupidity.

"This guy is making himself a multi-millionaire from conning people. The joke is on the customer if they're willing to pay that."
