Bolton boss pinpoints Manchester City and Liverpool style goals he wants Wanderers to score more

Ian Evatt wants Bolton Wanderers to score more of the goals associated with Premier League giants Manchester City and Liverpool from low crosses where attacking players are goalside of defenders.

The Trotters succumbed to back-to-back defeats yesterday against Walsall in League Two.

Wanderers went ahead in the first half thanks to Eoin Doyle, but the Saddlers equalised through Elijah Adebayo on the stroke of half-time, though there was suggestions that Ali Crawford had been fouled in the build-up.

And the hosts took the lead and all three points when Rory Holden lashed home from just outside the box after the break as Wanderers tasted defeat for the second weekend in a row.

The goal was Doyle’s eighth of the season and came from Nathan Delfouneso's pinpoint cross.

Wing-back Peter Kioso also teed up Delfouneso for what could have been Bolton's second, but the former Aston Villa and Blackpool forward was flagged offside.

Despite the defeat, Evatt pointed to the crossing opportunities that presented themselves to the Trotters and wants his side to score more of the type of goals associated with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola's sides.

“I think first half we created some space down the sides of them. We got Peter in some good positions, we had a goal disallowed for offside and we had some good crossing opportunities," he said.

"They’re the types of goals that we want to see. You see that all the time in the Premier League with Man City and Liverpool, that low cross in the corridor where the wingers and full-backs are goalside of defenders and not crossing from deep.

"It’s land of the giants with them (Walsall), if we cross from deep, they’re going to eat it up all day long so we have to find a different way.

"We did that first half, we hit the post with a similar move in the second half, but other than that, we didn’t do it consistently enough."
