Bolton boss Evatt assesses England's Euro 2020 win over Denmark and pinpoints wealth of attacking talent

Ian Evatt felt Denmark's lack of strength in depth helped England as their Euro 2020 semi-final wore on and ended in victory for the Three Lions as he admired both teams for their pressing strategies.

The Bolton Wanderers manager has had his say after England have reached the final of a major international tournament for the first time since winning the World Cup in 1966.

Gareth Southgate's Three Lions beat Denmark 2-1 after extra time at Wembley last night in front of 66,000 supporters.

Mikkel Damsgaard's brilliant free kick put the Danes in front in the first half, as Jordan Pickford conceded for the first time in the tournament.

But England rallied and went into the break on level terms after Denmark skipper Simon Kjaer put into his own net from Bukayo Saka's cross under pressure from Raheem Sterling.

The match went to extra time after being 1-1 at full-time, but England scored the winning goal through skipper Harry Kane.

The Spurs striker saw his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel, but Kane followed home the rebound for what proved to be the crucial strike, after Sterling was fouled by Joakim Maehle.

England are now preparing for Sunday's final against Italy at Wembley.

The Bolton boss enjoyed analysing the game as a manager and feels England now have the wealth of attacking players that typically other countries around the world have tended to have.

But with the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka among many final third options Gareth Southgate can call upon, Evatt feels the Three Lions now have a conveyor belt of attacking talent at their disposal.

He said: “I thought it was a really good match. I thought tactically as a manager/coach, it was a really good match to analyse. I thought both teams’ pressing strategies were very good.

"I think England figured it out second half and I think the changes that Denmark made to their team affected them. I think the strength in depth affected Denmark with the players coming off the bench weren’t the same level as the first XI. I think England took over in the last 20 minutes and extra time.

"I think we’ve, as a national team, if that’s doing well then the rest of the game is thriving, especially the English leagues. I think it’s great that we’re doing well in international football and it’s also great that we’ve got many, many young and talented players coming through.

"For a long time that wasn’t always the case and I said before we’ve always been strong defensively, but we’re now seeing the arrival of that foreign type forward player that we could never normally bring through.

"The Phil Fodens, the technical Jack Grealishes, the Bukayo Sakas, those types that we’ve always looked at Spain, Italy, Brazil, Portugal in envy because they develop these wonderful technicians and we’ve never really been able to do it.

"But we now seem to have a massive conveyor belt of this young talent that can do the things that the other countries can do.”
