Bollywood star Rhea Chakraborty arrested in connection to actor boyfriend's suicide

A Bollywood actress was arrested Tuesday by India's Narcotics Control Bureau for allegedly buying drugs for her boyfriend, another actor, before his suicide.

Rhea Chakraborty has been charged in connection to the death of her 34-year-old actor-boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput, who died by suicide in his flat in Mumbai on June 14, according to India's The Tribune.

Chakraborty's brother, Showik, and Rajput's former house manager, Samuel Miranda, have also been arrested in the same investigation.

Charges for the three have not been publicly revealed.

Chakraborty was denied bail after the Narcotics Control Bureau argued in court that she was an "active member" of a drugs syndicate and procured drugs for Rajput, The Tribune reported.

Rajput's family has accused Chakraborty of abetting his suicide by getting him addicted to drugs, but she has denied any involvement.

Chakraborty argued publicly that the whirlwind of gossip and speculation around the case, which has dominated Indian media since June, will make it impossible for her to get a fair trial.

"It's a complete trial by media," senior Supreme Court advocate Meenakshi Arora told the BBC before Chakraborty's arrest. "It's the job of the investigation and the courts, it's not the job of media to try her. Legally, this is so wrong."
