Bollywood Jane

Life is drab for 16-year-old Jane from Bradford. Her mum is a leather-clad, hard-drinking liability, her dad left them to it years ago, and her qualifications are such that stacking shelves in a supermarket seems like an impossible dream.

Then she stumbles across a run-down cinema showing old prints of classic Hindi films, and everything is transformed. Suddenly, she is surrounded with bouncing sunflowers, a phalanx of chiffon-draped maidens whirl in to whip up a chromatic riot and a smiling suitor comes shimmying towards her in a sparkly jacket. But things don't happen like that. Not in Yorkshire - or do they?

Actually, they do. The region is currently witnessing a 30,000-strong invasion of film folk as the Mumbai movie industry descends for this weekend's International Indian Film Awards. What with Bhangra partying in the streets and an all-star Bollywood XI playing at Headingley, you might think there would be scope for a play about a young girl who has become tired of vibrant dance routines and longs for life to return to normal. But this revival of Amanda Whittington's play, originally a big hit at Leicester Haymarket, makes a good job of tapping in to the party spirit.

Bollywood films have a fairly erratic sense of location, and Whittington takes a similarly cavalier attitude - one minute you're in A Taste of Honey, and then it's The Wizard of Oz. But director Nikolai Foster handles the transitions from kitchen sink to synchronised kitsch, and there is a pleasingly natural debut from Nichola Burley as Jane. A hard-working community chorus is drilled to perfection by choreographer Zoobin Surty. And the tender gay kiss between Avin Shah and Darren Kuppan indicates that the play is prepared to stray into areas where Bollywood most certainly wouldn't.
