Bollywood icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya rushed to hospital with coronavirus

Famous Indian actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been taken to hospital for coronavirus treatment, alongside her eight-year-old daughter Aaradhya.

Ms Rai Bachchan, who has acted in films including Bride and Prejudice and is a former Miss World, is being treated at Mumbai's Nanavati hospital, according to the ANI news agency.

She and her daughter both tested positive last week and have been self-isolating at home.

It comes after her husband Abhisek Bachchan and father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan - both famous Bollywood stars - were hospitalised on July 10 with the virus.

Amitabh, 77, who starred in the Great Gatsby and is perhaps India's best-known actor, tweeted on Sunday that he had tested positive.

Abhishek confirmed in a later tweet that his 46-year-old wife Aishwarya and daughter Aaradhya had also tested positive.

Amitabh's wife Jaya Bachchan, another famous actress, tested negative for the virus.

News that several members of the famous family are being treated for coronavirus has shocked India, with thousands of fans reportedly praying for them to get better.

India, the world's second largest country by population, has the third-highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world with more than one million, behind only the US and Brazil.

Infections appear to be accelerating, with a record 35,000 new cases in 24 hours recorded on Friday. More than 25,000 people have died.

Maharashtra, the state that contains Mumbai, still has the highest number of confirmed cases, with more than 280,000.
