Two British teenagers have been killed in a car crash on the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, in Bolivia.

Police in the South American country said the two tourists, both aged 19, died along with the driver of the vehicle.

The car flipped as it was driving on the salt flat, which is the main tourist destination in southern Bolivia, traffic police commander Colonel Bernardo Isnado said.

Isnado added that the vehicle was apparently driving over the speed limit at the time of the incident.

Bolivian authorities identified the British teenagers as 19-year-old Freddie Michael McLennan and George Joseph Atkins, and the driver of the vehicle as 22-year-old Alberto Barco.

Authorities said four other people were injured in the crash, which happened on Sunday night around 186 miles south of the Bolivian capital of La Paz.

The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, measuring more than 4,000 square miles.
