Boli Bolingoli hammered by SFA as Celtic defender hit with 5 game ban for coronavirus breach

Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli has been hit with a five game ban after flouting coronavirus protocols.

Two of the five matches have been suspended pending any potential future breaches.

The defender took an unauthorised trip to Spain at the beginning of August, with his club and manager Neil Lennon unaware.

The left-back did not quarantine on his return, breaking government rules on travel.

With the club unaware of his trip, the 25-year-old then risked exposing his Celtic team-mates and coaching staff to COVID-19 as he returned to training at Lennoxtown.

To make matters worse, Bolingoli then came off the bench in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock, spreading the risk to the Ayrshire club's players and staff.

As a result of his actions Celtic saw games against St Mirren and Aberdeen postponed, leaving the champions playing catch-up in the title race.

The SFA took a dim view of his actions, hitting Bolingoli with two charges under disciplinary rules 24 and 71 - failing to follow rules and bringing the game into disrepute.

For both charges the potential punishments range from a two, four or eight game ban depending on severity, with suspension or expulsion as the nuclear option.

And Bolingoli has been hit with a heavy ban, having already been ostracised from the squad.

However, manager Lennon has refused to rule out a return.

He said in his press conference ahead of Sunday's Motherwell game: "I can't comment on that. There will be the SFA one then we'll have our own sort of in house disciplinary and we'll take it from there.

"It has sort of dragged on a little bit now. We'll obviously have to look at that and see when and if he can come back in."

The verdict follows the "Aberdeen 8" being spared a heavy punishment for their own virus breach.

Bruce Anderson, Craig Bryson, Sam Cosgrove, Michael Devlin, Jonny Hayes, Matty Kennedy, Dylan McGeouch and Scott McKenna were handed suspended three-game bans following another Hampden tribunal.

The sanction which will hang over the players' heads until February 28, 2021, and will only kick in upon a further breach of the rules.
