Bold Virgil van Dijk claim made as Chelsea face Antonio Rudiger transfer concerns

William Gallas believes that if Antonio Rudiger can maintain his form he will reach the same level as Virgil van Dijk, but is not convinced the defender's future lies with Chelsea.

Rudiger's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and the German has been in talks since returning from Euro 2020. However, there are a number of high profile clubs linked with a move for the 28-year-old with a free transfer on the horizon.

Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are all reported to be interested in making a move, with the Bundesliga side the most recent team to show curiosity with Niklas Sule's contract also set to expire next summer.

football.london understands that the west London club are keen to keep the German past his current contract but his demands of £140,000 a week have put the brakes on any potential breakthrough in negotiations.

Thomas Tuchel believes that Rudiger feels 'very good' at Chelsea, but is that enough for him to stay? Gallas believes the out of contract star has the power to choose otherwise.

The former Blue told GentingBet: "The question is does he want to stay. Footballers careers are very short and maybe Toni has a dream to play in another league with another club.

"You have to respect that. In my opinion, he deserves a contract extension. I’m sure they are going to speak and to try to find the best solution for the both of them."

Rudiger's form has been a key part of driving any interest and the ex-Roma player was struggling to earn any pitch time before the arrival Tuchel.

The Germany international has been practically undroppable under his compatriot, bringing an unmatched intensity to the Chelsea side. Rudiger is possibly in his peak and it's leading to comparisons with who many consider the league's elite defender, Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

Gallas said: "Last season he had a great season with Chelsea. He played very, very well. He was very strong. He has to thank Tuchel. Since Tuchel has been managing Chelsea we’ve seen a new Rudiger. When you play with a player like him you know you can go to war.

"He is very important for Chelsea. With his performances they won the Champions League. You know that this guy is going to give everything for the shirt he’s wearing. He’s unbelievable. He’s a warrior.

"And they’ve started this season very well. If he’s consistent I’m sure he will be at the same level as Van Dijk."
