UEFA are considering plans to conclude the season in August to help lessen the impact of the coronavirus on football in Europe.
The decision to cancel Euro 2020 is already set to cost European football's governing body hundreds of millions.
And if domestic leagues are also abandoned, it would likely cost billions in lost TV deals.
A report in The Times claims one scenario on the table is for there to be a delayed start to the 2020/21 campaigns - and for that season to be shortened.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has said it is a possibility they may wait until August to complete the season.
Speaking to Italian paper La Repubblica, he said: “There is the possibility of ending this season at the start of the next, which would then be delayed and begin later.”
This potential plan is said to have received backing from the chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, Gordon Taylor.
The PFA chief has called for flexibility, as he said: “I don’t see why there should not be a flexible approach by everyone to finish this season in the proper manner no matter how long it takes.
"Domestically there is a lot of money at stake which would have a massive impact for the game.
"We’re talking about three-quarters of a billion pounds in TV money.”
It is also reported Premier League clubs have already been discussing wage deferrals and cuts and could be set to ask their players to agree to take a dock in pay.
Juventus, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are among those clubs who have already agreed upon wage cuts.
