Bold Championship claim made by Morecambe boss after history-making promotion

Morecambe boss Derek Adams has refused to rule out any possibilities for his newly-promoted side.

The Shrimps sealed promotion into League One yesterday for the first time in their history.

In their centenary year, Morecambe beat Newport County 1-0 at Wembley after extra-time. It means a first-ever campaign in the third tier awaits.

Plenty may be quick to dismiss them as relegation fodder next term, but Adams isn't limiting their ambitions. And he's using Aberdeen's European Cup exploits, which he watched growing up as a youngster in Scotland, as inspiration for his plucky side.

Adams was in the crowd in Gothenburg in 1983 when Aberdeen beat the mighty Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners' Cup final.

"This club can go to the Championship if it wants to because if you believe then you'll get somewhere." said the 45-year-old.

"We've shown this season you can do whatever you want to do.

"As a seven-year-old, I watched Aberdeen beat Bayern Munich and Real Madrid - so tell me what you can't do in this world."

It was perhaps fitting that Carlos Mendes Gomes scored the winner in the final for Morecambe. The 22-year-old from Senegal has an extraordinary back-story that involves playing for Atletico Madrid and West Didsbury and Chorlton before finally finding a home at Morecambe.

Yesterday was his 16th and final strike of a hugely fruitful campaign and already he is being linked with a move elsewhere.

Morecambe, naturally, will be desperate to hang on to him as they prepare for a first tilt at League One.

And if you fancy backing Adams' confidence that they can string together back-to-back promotions you'll certainly be rewarded handsomely.

Skybet are offering odds of 40-1 that Morecambe are toasting promotion into the Championship next season - with the Shrimps 150/1 to lift the title.

Adams, like Gomes, is also attracting admiring glances from elsewhere. It's been reported that Bradford City are within touching distance of agreeing for him to become their new manager.

But the Scot remained coy on the subject in the post-match interview following yesterday's win.

When quizzed on his future and the possibility of a done deal, he said: "My future lies in celebrating tonight. Morecambe Football Club are in League One, and they haven’t been there before.

"Listen, there are no done deals, and that’s me being perfectly honest.”
