BoJack Horseman‘s next season will be the show’s last.
The acclaimed animated series, which follows the adventures of a B-list actor who happens to be a horse, will wrap up after a two-part sixth season, it was announced on Friday.
The first instalment will air on Netflix on 25 October and the second will follow on 31 January.
A trailer for season six picks up where season five left off, with BoJack in rehab after mounting drug problems in season five.
The trailer is narrated in the form of a letter BoJack (voiced by Will Arnett) is writing to his friend Diane Nguyen (Alison Brie).
“The story of my life is that I never get anything nice,” he tells her. “You’d think that I’d learn to adjust my expectations by now.”
Diane, meanwhile, claims that she’s doing “great” (though her history in the series might suggest otherwise) and that the videos she’s producing for the website GirlCroosh (introduced in season three) “are making a difference”.
Princess Carolyn, BoJack’s agent, finally has a child after a long struggle to start a family, and she’s now trying to convince herself she’s “a strong, independent woman doing it all”.
Todd Chavez, BoJack’s friend, is wrestling with family trouble, and Mr Peanutbutter, BoJack’s nemesis, learns that just because he’s a seemingly happy-go-lucky Labrador, that doesn’t mean he can’t be depressed.
“I wasted so many years being miserable because I assumed that was the only way to be,” says BoJack. “I don’t want to do that anymore.”
BoJack Horseman has earned wide acclaim for its bluntly honest portrayal of fame, society and mental health since it premiered on Netflix in 2014.
It was nominated as Outstanding Animated Program at the 2019 Emmys.
