Bohemians boss Keith Long aware that keeping Danny Mandroiu at club will be a struggle if his fine form continues

Keith Long never panics when Danny Mandroiu hits a lull - because he knows he can turn it on in an instant.

But the Bohemians boss is also aware that the longer his ace playmaker keeps producing the goods, the harder it will be to hold onto him.

Mandroiu has been a revelation this season since signing from Brighton and scooped the SWAI Player of the Month award in June.

And on Friday he was the headline grabber in a remarkable FAI Cup win over city rivals Shelbourne at Dalymount Park.

Trailing 2-0 with five minutes to go, Keith Buckley pulled one back to give Bohs hope before Mandroiu won it with two long-range strikes in quick succession.

Gypsies boss Long said: “There are clubs watching him but he’s happy where he is, enjoying his football at the moment.

“I'm sure he still has ambitions of playing in the UK, Scotland, Europe or whatever it might be. If he continues to produce performances like that, why not?

“There will be interest but if he continues to do what he does on the park for us, that's a positive.”

Long continued: “He’s a special talent, fantastic. He's in double figures for goals and creates them too.

“Sometimes he's frustrating because talented players do that, they disappoint at times.

“But you have to trust them and believe in them because he can produce moments like that in games. He’s a match winner for us and a very effective player.

“I'd rather give him trust and be disappointed than not trust him and be miserable all the time, that's the reality of it.

“If you look around the league at No 10s, I'm not sure who in terms of those stats - the goals and assists - equals him.”

But Long hopes the dramatic nature of the FAI Cup first round victory can jolt the Gypsies back into life after a mixed run of form.

They have surrendered third spot in the league to Derry City and the race for Europe looks set to go down to the wire.

Quizzed on whether the Shels win could lift his side, Long said: “I hope so. We need one as the performances have dipped a little bit. But we have to put perspective on things.

“We’re fourth - joint third in the table and fourth on goal difference. We’ve had a fantastic season so far.

“We had a couple of blips recently and I don't think our performance levels have quite hit the heights that we had before the break.

“Hopefully the win on Friday can give us a little injection of confidence that maybe we need.”
