Bohemians 5 - Drogheda 0: Bald Bomber Georgie Kelly blows Drogs away with four goal blitz at Dalymount

Bald Bomber Georgie Kelly blew Drogheda United away tonight with four goals in Bohs' 5-0 blitz at Dalymount.

Now the league’s top scorer, the Donegal man spent 74 minutes tormenting the visiting defenders both on and off the ball.

The Drogs had come down to Dublin four points ahead of their hosts and have been the league's surprise success story so far this term, just as Bohs have arguably been the biggest disappointment.

None of that mattered in Dublin 7 tonight however - Drogheda just didn’t seem to have their “head in the game" while Dublin's Originals were rampant.

Ross Tierney, fresh from his under 21 international success, was key to getting things started for Bohs.

Leaping on a fantastic pass from Tyreke Wilson, he passed to Kelly who trickled it past David Odumosu in the Drogheda goal after only 11 minutes.

Just past the half hour, Kelly doubled his and his team's tally when he ran onto a ball launched into the box by stand-in skipper Rob Cornwall.

At half time it was two nil and this is a score that Bohs fans knew they had to improve on to be sure of the points.

Improve they did within a minute of the restart, when Scotsman Liam Burt slotted past Odumosu like it was a game in the park.

The goal, like so many this season, was the result of Ross Tierney’s hard work.

The young dynamo stole the ball from veteran Gary Deegan on the half way line before bursting forward towards the box.

His perfect pass found the waiting Burt after an unselfish step over from Kelly who at that stage was hunting his hat trick.

Three up and coasting, even the most cynical of supporters could sense the points belonged to the Gypsies.

Kelly completed his hat-trick five minutes later when yet again, Tierney explosively ran into the Drogs' box.

The shell-shocked defenders seemed to foul the youngster before the Bald Bomber took his tally to three.

With 20 minutes remaining, Long brought on Stephen Mallon, Club Captain Keith Buckley and fan’s favorite Keith Ward.

The change yielded results straight away when Kelly made it five from a fantastic Stephen Mallon cross.

Four-goal hero Kelly was then replaced by Bastien Hery and received a round of applause leaving the pitch not heard in Dalymount since pre pandemic days.

This was without doubt Bohemians' best game of the season - and exactly the kind of result needed ahead of Monday’s derby against Shamrock Rovers.

They remain in fifth spot, just a point behind Drogheda but ten points behind rivals Rovers, who beat Waterford this evening.

With fans back in Dalyer, Monday’s encounter is one not to be missed.
