Bohemian Rhapsody has undergone a few changes for its China release with references to Freddie Mercury's sexuality and any reference to homosexuality cut.
Homosexuality is not legal in China.
At least 10 scenes have been cut from the Oscar winning movie with fans saying it's left the film with a few plot holes and confusing moments.
Scenes such as Mary Austin breaking up with Mercury is altered and a few other big moments were left on the cutting room floor.
The Mary Austin scene is important to show why Mercury and Austin break up and is based off the real-life conversation they had .
According to Chinese film news site Moviebase the following scenes were cut from Bohemian Rhapsody:
Mercury dancing
Mercury touching his crotch during a live performance shown on TV screens as they air on BBC.
Kiss with manager
There's a scene where Mercury is sat at the piano in the studio where he's being kissed by manager Paul Prenter . The scene was cut but Paul holding his chin was kept.
When Mercury meets Hutton
Mercury kissing Jim Hutton when they first meet was cut and the conversation is altered so it's less obvious they are attracted to each other. Fans have said it makes no sense now it's had the cuts.
Mary Austin and Mercury break up
Mercury tells his girlfriend Mary Austin he's bisexual after she tells him he's gay - this is cut from the China release leaving fans wondering why the pair actually broke up. As you can imagine that leads to a lot of plot holes and general confusion.
Haircut
Drummer Roger Taylor saying Mercury’s new haircut was “gayer" is also cut.
I Want to Break Free
Queen dressed in drag while filming the “I Want to Break Free” music video is also cut. Some fans were baffled as China has allowed some TV series to show men dressing up before.
Party scenes
Mercury at the party patting a lady's bum and kissing a man was cut. The wild party scene was altered quite a lot to get rid of the more risque elements.
Mercury's Aids battle
Mercury telling the other members of Queen that he has Aids was cut. The word “Aids” is silenced, but you can still see his lips moving which is strange to say the least. It also means there's no real explanation for what follows.
The end slate
A picture and explanation about the real-life Mercury and Jim Hutton at the end of the movie was also cut.
How did people react to the cuts
"The film itself is not trying to highlight anything, but when we deliberately make deletions, it makes these things sensitive," said one Weibo user.
"In effect it feels like the whole movie has been cut, though in reality it's only a three-minute cut," said another.
Bohemian Rhapsody has already been storming the box office in China since its release despite the cuts, it became the biggest musical biopic soon after its release too.
Rami Malek won an Oscar for his performance as Mercury.
