Bogus workmen have targeted an elderly Ayrshire couple after agreeing to repair their roof but never bothered carrying out the work.
The conmen more than doubled the price of the work at the Largs home on Chapelton Way after alleging it had been completed.
It was only after they had left the couple, aged 78 and 80, noted the roof had not been repaired after all.
The couple allowed the men to carry out the work after believing a family member had arranged for them to attend their home.
The man who undertook the work was white, in his 30s, approximately 5ft 5in, slim with dark hair and a local accent, he was wearing work clothes. The second man was older, heavier set with grey hair.
They had attended the house in a red van.
Ayrshire Police Division are now encouraging everyone to be vigilant and not to deal with uninvited cold callers at their home. Officers say criminals can be very convincing and often specifically target the elderly or vulnerable members of communities.
How to protect yourself from doorstep crime
- Be on guard if someone turns up unexpectedly.
- Keep front and back doors locked.
- Fit a door chain or bar – use it and keep it on when talking to callers at the door.
- If you’re not sure, don’t answer the door.
- Don’t feel embarrassed - genuine callers expect you to be careful.
- Always ask for identification badges of anyone you answer the door to, but don’t rely on them. Identity cards can be faked – phone the company to verify their identity.
